Beginning of School Year
4 January 2010

The school year for the basic education project at the Deaf Development Programme is January through December. On this first Monday of the year, classes started for our new Year One students in Phnom Penh, Kampot, and Kampong Cham. These are photos from the first day of school in Phnom Penh.

Parents were invited to the first day of school to see the classrooms, get to know the DDP education staff, and perhaps to be of reassurance to their daughters and sons who have never attended a school before even though they are in their 20s. Parents and students meeting DDP staff
Kimhak (blue shirt) explained the possibilities for job training after students finish two years of basic education and learn sign language and reading and writing. Kimhak speaking to the group
There were extra motorbikes and motorcycle taxis outside the DDP gate at lunch time as parents made arrangements for their children to come home for lunch on the first day of school. DDP accepted 22 new students into Year One today in Phnom Penh. Lunch time
