Visit to DDP
26 February 2008

The deaf dancers from the Dong Nai School in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam had a natural bond with their DDP counterparts, and one of the activities for the free time of the Vietnamese group was a visit to the Deaf Development Programme offices and our hostel and community center.

Our DDP artist, Samath (facing camera, with paper), enjoyed the attention as he was able to explain his work in sign language research. Sokchea, his colleague (in black, on right) looks on.
We give all our visitors a paper with the Cambodian fingerspelling on it, but the Dong Nai group had more than a passing interest in it.
One of the Dong Nai sign language researchers talks about her work with Samath and Dr. James "Woody" Woodward.
Upstairs at the DDP office, our visitors from Vietnam met our first year students who just started learning sign language in January. It is really good for our students, with their limited understanding of the deaf world, to talk to deaf visitors from other countries.
At the deaf community center, one of the main attractions was the bicycles which have gears. Apparently the geared bikes are not that common in Vietnam.
