Seventh-Day Funeral Ceremony for DDP Student

8 November 2010

Part 1      Part 2      Part 3

Life under the house
Most Cambodian families outside the city live under their houses, going up into the enclosed area only at night for protection while they sleep.  The kids playing, the cooking, the naps, the house work takes place under the building during the day.
Friends and neighbors under the house These are some of the relatives and friends of the young man who was killed in the motorcycle accident.
Big trucks for road construction
The national highway runs in front of the house and is being reconstructed and widened.  Huge trucks of stone and dirt were traveling by throughout the ceremony.
Battery-powered PA system There is no electricity in the part of Kampot province where Sary's family lives but the PA system is a cultural necessity for weddings and funerals, driving a wall of speakers that make conversation impossible.  The PA system is run from a truck battery running through an inverter to produce 220 volts output.
Kids fishing
The younger kids really didn't understand what the funeral was about and some of them were fishing in the large ponds that are created in front of each house for water to use during the dry season which is just beginning.
Kids playing Other kids were playing games behind the house.  Notice the outhouse by the fence.
