Deaf Day Celebration |
This was probably the largest gathering for Deaf Day in its 12-year history in Cambodia and it was the best organized and in the best location we have ever used. All in all, it was a nice, fun, and enjoyable day for the deaf community. |
The DDP barber training students offered free haircuts throughout the day, and they were quite busy, especially in the morning, cutting many more heads than they had anticipated.
It may not seem immediately necessary or appropriate for a DEAF day celebration, but the deaf groups always want to have a loud sound system, just like the hearing people do. Most of the deaf people present would not even know there was a sound system going all day but it's important to have it because culturally in Cambodia an event is no fun if it is not painfully loud. Notice the input system consists of a simple iPod!
Here is Vannarith, a happy winner of one of the guessing contests!
The Deaf Day celebrations were made possible by a large core group of volunteers who worked quite hard beforehand and throughout the day itself to provide the food and games and a general good time for all who came.
Darren Frazier and Ronise Barreras offered to take some photos during the day. Here Darren, on the ladder, takes a group photo of the deaf contingents from the different provinces.
One of the last acts of the day was loading the Pepsi drinks machine on to the Pepsi truck. |
