Meetings
11-14 March 2008

Maryknoll Cambodia and the Finnish Association of the Deaf jointly sponsor one of the projects of the Deaf Development Programme. This project promotes skills development and includes basic education, job training, and sign language interpreting.  Every year DDP meets with an FAD Project Coordinator from Finland to discuss the progress of the project.

Vichet reports on the interpreting project The meetings were held at the offices of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) which has assisted us in similar ways in the past.  The early part of the agenda focused on reports from the three projects.  Here Vichet reports on sign language interpreting while Charlie interprets for one of the deaf staff.
An impromptu meeting Vichet (middle) and Thary (right) confer with Sokly, the new program manager, while Ronise (left) studies a report.
The job training team Chhunlim (left) and Stephanie (right) discuss the Skills Development Project with Susan serving as interpreter.
Modern and Ossi Modern (left) served as a voice interpreter (spoken Khmer to spoken English). Here he confers with Ossi Oinonen, the FAD representative who came from Helsinki.
The meetings continue Ossi brought news that Finnish Association of the Deaf will not fund the Deaf Development Programme in 2009, so long discussions followed about securing funding for the future.  One day the sessions were interrupted by what sounded like automatic weapons fire (not a totally uncommon sound in Phnom Penh) but turned out to be fireworks from a nearby store celebration.
