Mission to Cambodia |
Today was the first day of a two-day workshop held at the Sunway Hotel, with representatives from three groups who work with deaf people: Krousar Thmey, the Deaf Development Programme, and CVMD, a relatively unknown group. This slide, written in Thai and English, gave the theme for the gathering.
Two Thai deaf leaders facilitated the day's discussions and activities. Yongyut Borrisut was joined by a deaf woman, Panomwan Boontem, who did not come to the DDP offices yesterday. Both are presidents of the National Association of the Deaf in Thailand and a deaf women's group respectively.
Watching sign language continuously is fatiguing and hard on the eyes, especially when watching unfamiliar signs across a large room. The participants were happy and ready when the time came for the morning break.
After the break the presentations continued. In the morning session, each organization was asked to give some information about its program and membership.
The participants from Krousar Thmey and the Deaf Development Programme are all proficient signers, but the deaf people from CMVD do not know sign language and were at a definite disadvantage in understanding and participating in the dynamics of the workshop.
Ms. Panomwan Boontem is the president of a Thai deaf women's group. Here she consults with one of the interpreters about the slides for her presentation she was to give later.
After lunch the deaf people had some small-group discussions and then reported their ideas. These two deaf people are from the Deaf Development Programme.
Another small group report also featured another DDP member to make the report for the group.
The workshop started at 9:00 AM and went to 4:30 PM with an hour for lunch. After the participants left, the Thai staff gathered for a quick review of the day and planning for the presentations the next day. |
