Mission to Cambodia |
The second day of the APCD workshop started off with an exercise led by Panomwan Boontem.
The workshop used Thai Sign Language, Cambodian Sign Language, International Sign, and spoken Thai and spoken Khmer, with English used unofficially on the sidelines. A team of six interpreters would go from spoken Thai to spoken Khmer to Cambodian Sign Language or from Thai signing to Cambodian signing. Here two of the interpreters work back-to-back.
The man standing with the microphone interpreted between spoke Thai and spoken Khmer. The seated interpreter went from spoken Thai to Thai Sign Language for the two presenters.
Once again people were ready for the morning break!
Many of the deaf people have little opportunity to see each other and to communicate in sign language, so an opportunity like the workshop to catch up with each other is a happy occasion.
Here a deaf youth makes a comment on a discussion of life experiences of deaf people.
In a deaf conference the setting is always a "U" shape so all the participants can see each other and see each other's sign language.
During one activity, this small group discussed health and medical issues that affect deaf people.
This small group was discussing the ways that families do or do not support their deaf children.
For lunch, the participants ate at the wonderful buffet service of the Sunway Hotel.
The afternoon started with a warm-up activity, trying to get all the members of each small group on to a paper that kept decreasing in size.
The room was quite busy when all the small groups and facilitators were involved in various discussions.

Finally it was time to leave at the end of the second day. These deaf people are taking tuk-tuks back to the Deaf Development Programme office. |
